Experience matters.
Try different things.
When it comes to career and personal development, experience is the key. Through experience and
engaging with others, you learn about yourself and the world around you, gain skills and confidence, and
demonstrate your passion to employers and graduate schools.
Internships
Service & Volunteering
Doing an internship is one of the best ways to
gain professional experience in an organization or
industry, and to learn more about yourself – what
you like and don’t like. Internships can help you find what truly
interests you, help you define your goals, and give insight into
future endeavors.
Research (PURE)
Participating in scholarly work can help you apply
concepts you are learning in the classroom to realworld problems. Students can partner with WOU
faculty to create work for the annual Academic
Excellence Showcase or submit research to our academic journal,
PURE Insights, or both.
Leadership
There are myriad opportunities to develop
leadership skills, including student government,
engagement, media, and activities board.
Recognize and capitalize on your personal and team strengths to
achieve organizational goals.
Study Away
Volunteering demonstrates that you value
contributing to something larger than yourself,
have strong time management skills, you’re a team
player, and you are proactive in expanding your skill set. Being
engaged shows that you are invested in creating the community
and world in which you want to live, and the network you build
through service work can serve as important references when
applying for future professional positions.
Clubs & Organizations
Joining clubs and organizations is a great way to
connects with others who have similar interests and
goals, learn about new opportunities, and explore
what really lights your fire. There are more than 70 groups at
WOU, or you can start your own.
Job Shadowing
By observing professionals in their daily work life,
you gain invaluable insight into diverse careers and
workplace dynamics. This firsthand experience
serves as a vital bridge between classroom learning and realworld application, empowering you to clarify your career goals
and make informed decisions about your future path.
By studying away, including programs abroad and
National Student Exchange, you will experience
new perspectives, learn how to navigate different
cultures, work with a diverse group of peers, and develop your
interpersonal and communications skills, possibly in another
language. Programs include direct exchange, faculty-led,
internships, and language learning.
